Name: Adrien Agreste
Age: ~14
Canon: Miraculous Ladybug
Canon Point: There's no concrete timeline, but after the episode Volpina, at the end of season 1's airing.
Physical Description: [1] [2]
Canon Abilities: Adrien is in possession of both the "Cat Miraculous" ring and its Kwami, a creature named Plagg. When Plagg is there and Adrien wants to transform into his superhero self, Plagg is is dragged into his ring whether he likes it or not, his energy as a Kwami powering the ring Adrien wears, enabling him to transform into Chat Noir.
As Chat Noir, he has two key abilities: the power of "bad luck" and the power of "destruction." His partner Ladybug is the only one able to catch Akuma, evil butterflies used by Papillon that possess people and turn them into supervillains. That means if Ladybug is incapacitated, there's no one there to save the day. In other words, Chat Noir's bad luck is actually good luck, because although he's hit with the brunt of incapacitating attacks, he takes them for Ladybug so she has time to save the day. His power of bad luck works in harmony with Ladybug's good luck in that together they create a balance. Chat Noir's power of destruction is manifested in his "Cataclysm" ability, in which the next thing he touches with his hand decays. Iron fences rust, buildings rot away and collapse, etc. He's never used it on a person, but it's likely they would decay, too. Without Plagg, he is just a (somewhat) normal teenage boy. No special abilities, no magical domino mask.
Possessions: His clothes and his Plagg-less Miraculous.
Personality: Adrien is a polite and mild-mannered teenage boy with a strong sense of justice. In the Origins two-parter, he begins the series incredibly frustrated, isolated and desperate to attend collège* (hover for info) like a normal teenage boy. Deep down, he's fairly troubled but he manages to be a good person in spite of that. He spends so much of his time doing what will make his father Gabriel happy that it's rare for him to be able to do anything he wants. So, when he wants something badly enough, he runs for it at top speed. Although his father, his father's assistant Nathalie and his bodyguard "the Gorilla" all insist Adrien is better off being home schooled, he wants so desperately to be a normal student that he attempts to sneak out of his mansion to attend school. Although they catch him repeatedly, he's stubborn and refuses to just give up, spending the first half of the Origins special just trying to get to school.
But sometimes Adrien's too kind-hearted for his own good, like when he could probably have made it into school if he hadn't noticed an old man struggling to get up without his cane. Instead of making a break for it, Adrien dashes over to the old man, gives him back his cane and gently helps him stand up again, all the while keeping a warm smile on his face. His act of charity ended with Nathalie and the Gorilla taking him home again, but Adrien's decision to put others' needs before his own and being able to keep a smile on his face while doing so are what inspired the old man, who'd been faking feebleness, to secretly give Adrien the "Cat Miraculous," a ring that is bound to the black cat Kwami.
He and his partner Ladybug receive their Miraculouses on the same day, and they react in a polar opposite manner. While Marinette is apprehensive to become Ladybug, Adrien practically jumps at the call. In fact, he jumps at the call so quickly that Plagg doesn't even get a chance to explain everything to Adrien before he's sucked into the Miraculous, transforming Adrien into Chat Noir. He is eager to save Paris, to do something meaningful and exciting in his life. It's something he wants to do, and since no one knows that Chat Noir is really Adrien Agreste, he's completely free to do so.
Transforming into Chat Noir changed Adrien's life for the better. For the first time in ages, he was able to be himself. He could say or do whatever he wanted without worrying about disappointing his father or anyone else. As Chat Noir, Adrien doesn't have to worry about not maintaining a proper model image. He can make cat puns and no one will judge him (too harshly).
Still, it's a balancing act. Adrien knows he has to be on his best behavior and he needs to adhere to his strict schedule. His inability to even go to school was the only concern Adrien had about becoming a superhero. After all, what good is a hero who can't leave their home without permission? But Adrien eventually receives permission to attend school, which he somehow finds time to manage on top of his busy schedule.
Adrien and his Chat Noir persona may seem like night and day, or it may seem like Adrien is becoming more like Chat Noir's personality over time, but that isn't the case. There are bits of Chat Noir in Adrien and vice versa because they are the same person with the same personality simply expressed differently. His time spent as Chat Noir enables him to be himself, even when it's difficult.
Throughout the series, Adrien goes from an incredibly awkward teenager who isn't even familiar with roll call in school to a much more confident version of himself. He makes genuine friends and learns not to keep his emotions bottled up. Most importantly, he learns to speak up both for himself and for others who are unable to or afraid to do so themselves. He stops being such a doormat to Chloé and becomes firmer with her, and he even calls out Ladybug despite his huge crush on her when he feels she's being unheroic.
Of course, he's far from perfect. He can be pretty insecure, especially when it comes to how people feel about him. He considers Chat Noir to be the "real him," the Adrien Agreste without any filters. So when he casually asks Marinette if she likes him or Chat Noir more, he's a little confused and defeated when she tells him she likes Adrien better. He can also let his jealousy get the better of him, like when his lie about him and Ladybug being a battle couple ends up turning someone into an Akumatized villain. Adrien is also perfectly capable of letting his desire to be normal get the better of him. The best example of this is during The Bubbler, where his best friend Nino wanted him to have a birthday party. Adrien's father refused to allow it to happen, which in turn made Nino furious on Adrien's behalf. This left him vulnerable to be possessed by an Akuma, and he became a villain whose goal was to throw Adrien a party. Instead of immediately helping his friend and trying to get rid of the Akuma, he actually takes a few minutes to enjoy the party since it's his very first one. If it weren't for the unhappy looks of his classmates who were being forced to party or risk being shot into outer space in a bubble, he might not have done anything about it for quite a while.
History: [ Link ]
There's no real timeline of the show. For the majority of the show, it's just monster of the week, but there are some important plot points/character growth so I'll sum it up as concisely as I can.
Up until the start of the series, his life revolved around a strict, rigid schedule. Fencing, piano, Chinese, modeling, although he never really particularly enjoyed the latter and only did it to please his father. At some point, his mother disappeared and his father's attitude shifted; he became very cold and detached, leaving Adrien mostly in the care of Nathalie and the Gorilla. This was Adrien's life until, as he's trying to escape into school like a weirdo, he spots Master Fu struggling to reach his cane. After Adrien decided to ditch his escape (intrusion?) attempt to help the old man up, Master Fu decided that someone who put the needs of others before his own was worthy of the Cat Miraculous.
Thus, Adrien found himself the owner of the Cat Miraculous, a white ring, and the "owner" of Plagg, the Cat Kwami. Adrien was quick to don his superhero outfit and called himself Chat Noir, a simple name translating to Black Cat. The day he got his Miraculous was the same day Marinette earned her Miraculous, and they've been partners ever since. They spend the majority of the reason relying on each other and helping each other out. And somehow end up in a love square with themselves. Chat Noir is in love with Ladybug for her fiery determination and her honesty; Ladybug is unhappy with Chat Noir's advances because she, as Marinette, only has eyes for Adrien; and Adrien doesn't even know Marinette likes him and thinks he just makes her uncomfortable sometimes, so he focuses his "romantic" advances on Ladybug.
As the Monsters of the Week go on by, the students at Adrien's collège grow a little closer, save for Chloé who continues to be her unkind self. Every single one of Adrien's classmates (except for Marinette), become Akumatized at some point, and he works together with Ladybug as Chat Noir to de-Akumatize them. Sometimes, other people are Akumatized such as the parents of his classmates, or his friends, but it's always just 1 or 2 degrees of separation from Adrien and Marinette.
Things get shaken up a little toward the end of the season, particularly during Volpina. Adrien's spots a safe behind a mural of his mother. Although he doesn't have the guts to break in, Plagg phases right through the safe and opens it up. Inside is a book detailing the Miraculouses, what appears to be a Peacock Miraculous that may or may not have belonged to his mother, a photo of his mother, and a variety of other things. Adrien convinces himself to take the notebook so he can peruse it later.
This "later" is when he meets Lila, a girl who is apparently from Italy and apparently quite famous. She sees the book about Miraculouses and wants to get closer to it, and eventually ends up stealing the book from Adrien without him noticing. He and Lila meet at the park to discuss Ladybug, who Lila claims is a good friend of her. However, pretty much everything she says is a lie, and Ladybug herself shows up to let Adrien know what a liar Lila is. The confrontation is enough to make Lila storm off, after which Papillon Akumatizes her. However, instead of turning into a supervillain, she turns into Volpina, the title of which belongs to a real Miraculous holder. Volpina takes advantage of this and convinces Chat Noir and Ladybug that she's the real deal and that she has a plan to capture Papillon for good, to stop the butterflies from Akumatizing people.
Eventually, Chat Noir and Ladybug figure out it's a lie and defeat her, but Lila is left with a sour taste in her mouth about Ladybug. A few important points are brought up: particularly, that even though Chat Noir and Ladybug are forbidden from sharing their identities, keeping it secret could be potentially detrimental. Volpina was able to fool them both because even after all these weeks and months fighting as a duo, they have no idea who the real identity of their partner is. So when Volpina, graced with the ability to create illusions, poofed up a fake Adrien, Ladybug wasn't willing to risk that Adrien being an illusion. She was willing to give up her Miraculouses to save the fake Adrien; meanwhile, Chat Noir couldn't just say "HEY, I'M ADRIEN AGRESTE!!" He could only try to assure her that he just knew it wasn't him.
The first season draws to a close on this note, with Marinette learning more about Master Fu and Adrien being upset that he can't tell Ladybug who he is and that Ladybug will never let him know her real identity either.
